I was diagnosed in 2020 with early-stage Parkinson’s Disease. I don’t currently have the tremors typically associated with Parkinson’s, but I suffer from hidden symptoms which include anxiety, low mood, depression, apathy and not wanting to mix or socialise. I became quiet and insular, not wishing to mix with strangers or even my friends. Part of my ongoing treatment involves mental and physical exercise therapy – during these sessions I was asked to look at external groups or classes that could improve my mental health and physical wellbeing.
After a little research, I came across Dorking Men’s Shed. It took courage but I made initial contact and was invited to come along and see what it’s like. Immediately I felt very welcome and comfortable in their company; there’s absolutely no pressure – if you don’t want to do anything, you can simply come along and have a tea, coffee and chat.
Since joining, I’ve started to make new friends and regain my confidence and enthusiasm. My wife has commented that she has seen a big uplift in my mood, and I appear to be getting my Mojo back. As well as the twice-weekly sessions that I’ve been enjoying where I’ve made a few items with wood craft, I’ve actively started joining the mid-week walk with a small group from The Shed.
I’m finding everything about The Shed therapeutic and positively distracting for me. If you are feeling any of the symptoms that I had, I would really recommend joining a Men’s Shed. As a bonus, some of the projects I’ve made have made my wife wish there was a shed for women!
I truly recommend anyone to come along, get involved, make new friends. You will start to feel better in yourself and will be made to feel very welcome.
